Three influential books

1. Siddartha by Herman Hesse:
Siddartha by Herman Hesse changed my life in the sense of religion. As Siddartha Guatama went through is journey for knowledge and enlightenment, I have also picked up on the enlightenment that this book holds. It has taught me many lessons such as, Noone is smart, only wise, and you only become wise once you are able to admit that noone knows everything, then you learn your first lesson. Another lesson it has taught me is to be open to all options, ideas, and people, never discriminate anything. I take this deeply as that I may only have one life to live, so I should experience all I can while I can.

2. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo:
Les Miserables is another book that has made my outlook on life change. Before i could understand the problems the world had outside of where I lived, I needed to read this book. The adventure of Jean Valjean and Cossette opened my eyes to how hard life can be, and to only expect what is basically expected, never to expect something greater than yourself. If anything were to happen that would mark you fortunate, then you will be surprised and happy but, on the other hand, if something were to happen not so fortunate, but more basic, then you would deal with it to the best of your abilities the way you expected. This has helped me look at the world through a greyer view, and gain knowledge on the more unfortunate outlooks of life, or, the more miserable some would say. This has ultimatly helped me physiologically when I must deal with a hard subject.

3.Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk:
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is the book I chose to be my last influential book for this list because it is the first book I read that has modern writing but a compelling style that mimics the classics. Haunted is a series of short stories that are made by authors in a larger story inside the actual book. This idea, of a story about people making stories of the despair and sloth, and greed, and freak accidents they share and have witnessed just adds to the epicness of this book. From story to style, this book is one to be looked upon upon writing anything modern today. Setting the flag for other authors and other stories to match and hopefully carry forward as well.

McLuhan's Theory

For this blog I have picked to exibit McLuhan's Theory, My technology example is Blogging! Blogging enhances human thought, and allows you to express personal feelings. It takes away regular pen and paper writing, by being digital for all to see. It reverses, however, because you become a social hermit, wrapped in your own house to your own computer, therefore to your original thoughts. And finally, Blogs bring back diaries and/or journals, the act of writing out your deepest problems or feelings or just daily deeds. This is a prime example of McLuhan's Theory of technology, and I believe it shows this well.

Media Autobiography

As far as Media in my life goes, it was, is, and will be a huge part of my life. From a very young age I was surrounded by media and it developed genetically as well. Books are where my love for media all started, i went from reading Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter, to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Rant. My favorite books so far have to be Haunted by Chuck Palahnuick, a fiction, and Maus by Art Spiegelman, a graphic biography. Newspapers come next in a sense, I have always grown up reading the comics in the paper, and only the comics, but recently I have been interested in the local news and the political news, due to my age and my role in the economy. Magazines entered my life right about my early teen years, I do not like magazines like People or Star because they are all about spying on celebrates, in which most of them do not want that kind of publicity. I do like the National Inquirer purely for humor, and I do read Men's Health for information and tips to better myself. Movies are the biggest media influence I have in my personal history. I appreciate the classics such as "Breakfast at Tiffanys" and on the other spectrum " The Hunchback of Notre Dame" with Lon Chaney, not the Disney version. I dislike many films however, most of them from this generation, I am a very hard critic. The movies I dislike the most are "Battlefield Earth" and "Twilight" (sorry everyone else who loves Twilight). Recordings are in my life everyday, on my phone alone I jam packed a SD card with music, i live all the time with music in my ears. Music i dislike is Mexican Ranchero music, I cannot stand it. Also, I'm constantly on youtube looking for funny videos to laugh at......Chocolate Rain is pretty funny. The radio is a recently deceased for me, what with MP3's and even CDs I have almost completely gotten rid of the radio and all of its advertisements that i hate so so much. Television, however, is a long lasting and still growing aspect of my media lifestyle, from movies on t.v to regularly programed shows, television grabs me everytime. I always love watching the old shows that my father and my mother grew up watching, such as Three's Company and The Andy Griffith Show. I have also developed favorites that I hope my children will watch with me and enjoy the comedy or authenticity of my shows. A few of my favorite shows are Futurama and The Venture Brothers. On the other side, the type of shows I cannot stand to watch are problem talk shows like Jerry Springer and Montel, and Soap Operas such as, Days of our lives and General Hospital. Finally, the internet has always been a massive mean of communication but I have always tried to steer clear from communicating through email with people I can see anytime I would like and I say that to point out my cousins. Spam has to be the worst thing I can receive via email. Chainmail is the type of spam I get from my cousins and they come up with very intellectual excuses for why they send me useless junk mail, excuses like "I thought it was cute" or "I had noone else to send it to!" well i want my 5 min of life for each junk mail back! I'm not going to get them back though, oh well. I love social networking though, Facebook is my favorite social network on the internet, then comes Myspace. Twitter I have no idea how to tweet but I probably should, eventually. Moving on, my only career involving any sort of media is i've acted for 13 years and I tried my hand at Creatt.v. in downtown San Jose. I am a Photo Journalism major and I would like to transfer into San Jose State or UC Santa Cruz. Thanks for reading all of this blog and I look forward to making more interesting and thought provoking blogs throughout these 12 weeks.- Joelioso
